Current status (checked 12 October 2026)
Babele and the Sphinx are open-air rock formations on the Bucegi plateau, in Bucegi Natural Park; they have no opening hours of their own. The usual access is by the Bușteni–Babele cable car, which has its own separate page in this guide and can stop in strong wind. The weather at altitude changes quickly, so bring warm clothes even in summer.
What you see
Babele are mushroom-shaped rocks, shaped by wind and rain, right next to the upper cable-car station. The Sphinx is a rock that, seen from a certain angle, looks like a human face; tourist sources give it about 8 metres in height and 12 metres in width. Between the two it is a 10–15 minute walk.
Good to know
There is nowhere on the plateau to shelter from the rain, so it is not a choice for a day of bad weather. The cable-car ride takes about 13 minutes each way. Children under 5 travel free. Pushchair or wheelchair access is not stated in the sources consulted.
