Current status (checked 12 October 2026)

The church belongs to the “Saint John the Baptist” Monastery in Poiana Brașov, an active Orthodox monastery. No visiting hours have been published for 2026: the tourist information centre in Poiana Brașov shows daily hours of 08:00–21:30, but the page is not dated. Keep the services in mind and check before your visit.

A Maramureș church in the mountains

The church was built between 1997 and 1999, entirely of wood, in the style of the churches of Maramureș, with the bell tower above the porch. Its tall, pointed silhouette stands out against the forest and the mountain. It is a recent building, and its charm lies in the wood, the craftsmanship and the quiet of the place, in the middle of a busy resort.

The feast day and the visit

The monastery's patronal feast is the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on 24 June; the monastery also keeps the feast of Saint Poemen the Great, on 27 August. The monastery belongs to the Archdiocese of Sibiu. A visit to the church also works on a rainy day. It is an active place of worship, so come in modest dress and keep quiet during services.
