By appointment only (checked 12 October 2026)
The church in Bunești has no published schedule for 2026. The latest information found, from a travel website without a precise date, says that in summer it is open daily, but only by appointment, with Doina Scoica, +40 770 239 870. An older German guide notes that the exterior can be seen at any time, that for the interior the key is collected in the village, and that a donation towards the church's upkeep is expected. Call before you set off.
The village that gives the commune its name
Bunești (Bodendorf) is the centre of a commune of five villages — Bunești, Criț, Meșendorf, Roadeș and Viscri — each with its own fortified church. Viscri, the best known of them, is a few kilometres away, so Bunești fits easily into the same trip.
A basilica strengthened step by step
The church was built in the 13th century as a pillar basilica in late Romanesque style. In the 14th and 15th centuries it was fortified step by step, with defence storeys over the nave, chancel and bell tower. The 14th-century enclosure wall has survived in full. The wooden altar dates from 1805, and the Rococo organ above it was moved in 2007 to St Martin's Church in Brașov. The ensemble was restored between 2010 and 2014.
