A 13th-century basilica

The village of Cața is the seat of the commune of the same name, and the church stands on the county road DJ132B, at no. 37. The ensemble is a historic monument (LMI code BV-II-a-A-11628). Its core is a pillar basilica dated to around 1250, whose Romanesque features can still be seen inside. In the 15th century the chancel and apse were rebuilt in Gothic style. The west tower collapsed in 1894 and was never rebuilt.

Two rings of walls

The 15th-century defence wall keeps four of its original six towers. In the 17th century a second wall was added, with an outer bailey; parts of it were demolished in 1884 and 1937 for the school and the community hall. The church was damaged by a fire around 1706.
