How to find it open (checked 12 October 2026)
According to Brașov Tourism, in summer the church in Criț is open daily, but the hours are not published. The keys are with a local, Dietmar Depner (+40 740 597 493), and groups are asked to announce their visit in advance. The Fortified Churches Foundation (Kirchenburgen) gives the Evangelical Parish of Rupea as the contact, on +40 268 260 378. Outside summer, call before you set off.
The village on the hill
Criț (Deutsch-Kreuz) is one of the five villages of the commune of Bunești, together with Bunești, Meșendorf, Roadeș and Viscri, each with its own fortified church. The church stands on a hill in the middle of the village. The village appears in documents in 1270, and Kirchenburgen notes that the first village school law in Transylvania was adopted here more than 400 years ago.
What has survived
The medieval church was demolished in 1810 and replaced, between 1810 and 1813, by a classicist hall church with a bell tower to the west. From the 15th-century fortification, the ring wall and four defence towers have survived; the fifth collapsed in 1925. Outside the walls you can see the ruins of the old Saxon school. The ensemble was restored in an EU-funded project in 2010–2014.
