What we know about visiting (checked 12 October 2026)
No daily schedule is published for the church in Dacia in 2026. The latest published information, from a German website updated in 2015, says it can be visited during the day and that there is free parking in front of the church. The Fortified Churches Foundation (Kirchenburgen), which has a page dedicated to the church, gives the Evangelical Parish of Rupea as the contact, on +40 268 260 378. Call before you set off.
A basilica turned into a fortress
Dacia, Stein in Saxon, is a village near Rupea. In the 13th century a three-aisled basilica without a tower stood here. Around 1500 the side aisles were removed, the arcades were walled up, and the chancel and nave received battlements and a defence storey. A few years later the nave was covered with a barrel vault bearing the year 1517.
The wall and later changes
In the 15th century the church was surrounded by a wall 6–8 metres high, shaped as an irregular quadrilateral. In 1845 the church was extended to the west, and the battlements and the arches between the buttresses were removed.
