Current status (checked 12 October 2026)

The church in Drăușeni is a monument in poor condition. An article in the Brașov press from 4 October 2026 speaks of advanced decay and a planned restoration, with works that were to start once funds were allocated. The Fortified Churches Foundation (Kirchenburgen) writes that extensive restoration works have been under way for several years and have uncovered frescoes over large areas. There are no published visiting hours, so don't count on finding the church open.

The basilica of Drăușeni

The village of Drăușeni belongs to the commune of Cața, and the church stands at 142 Strada Principală. The Romanesque basilica was completed in the mid-13th century, replacing an older 12th-century church. The ensemble is a historic monument (LMI code BV-II-a-A-11672).

The fortification of 1494

In the fortification phase of 1494, defence storeys were raised over the tower, nave and chancel. At the same time an 8-metre defence wall with five bastions was built, preserved to this day. A legend says the first Saxon settlers swore loyalty to the king by thrusting their swords into the ground, and one of the two swords ended up in Drăușeni.
