A church without its fortress
Hălchiu, Heldsdorf in German and Höltövény in Hungarian, is a village in the Burzenland, north of Brașov. In the 13th century an early Gothic church dedicated to Saint Andrew was built here. A 1727 drawing by Andreas Altomonte shows the former fortification: an inner enclosure with two towers and an outer enclosure with four towers. The fortification was removed in 1894–1895, so today you see the church, not the fortress.
The Hălchiu altar
The reason to stop is the altar. The winged altar was set up in 1528 and restored in 1975–1976 by Gisela Richter of Brașov. It is 8.1 metres high and 7.7 metres wide, and the choir that holds it is richly coloured and unusually large.
