Current status (checked 12 October 2026)

We found no published visiting hours for 2026. The church is looked after by a couple of local curators, and the Fortified Churches Foundation has included it among the two pilot sites of its maintenance programme. To see it inside, contact the Evangelical Parish of Prejmer in advance; it is listed as the contact on the Foundation's page.

The village of walnuts

Măieruș is called Nussbach in German, and its first record, from 1377, names it "villa nucum", the village of walnuts. In the 14th and 15th centuries the Saxon community built a Gothic hall church here, with an attached bell tower. In 1475 the tower was raised, and also in the 15th century the church was surrounded by a defensive wall 6–8 metres high.

What you see today

A fire in 1573 destroyed much of the church, and for a long time the repairs were only provisional. Between 1791 and 1793 the choir was demolished and the hall was extended to the east. Most of the enclosure wall was torn down at the end of the 19th century to make room for a school, so today only remains of it can be seen.
