Current status (checked 12 October 2026)

The complex is in decay. Burgenwelt notes that the whole enclosure is in decline, and the community of Saxons who left the village has launched a rescue appeal for the church. A guesthouse in the village describes it as a ruin and says it can be visited on request. There are no published hours, so set off knowing that you will most likely see it from the outside.

From basilica to fortress church

Mercheașa is called Streitfort in German, and its first record, from 1400, names it "Stristfordia". The church was in all likelihood built in the 13th century as a Romanesque basilica with three naves and a western tower. In the 15th century the side aisles were removed and it became a hall church. Around the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries it was surrounded by a 6–7-metre wall with towers at the corners; the surviving tower bears inscriptions from 1517 and 1541.

What remains

In 1658 the village was set on fire by the Turks, and the church was damaged. In the 19th century, parts of the wall were demolished for a town hall and a school. Of the corner towers, only the south-east one has survived; the north-west tower collapsed and was replaced between 1848 and 1858 by a bell tower. Of the Romanesque basilica, the nave and the square of the choir are preserved. The complex is a historic monument (LMI code BV-II-a-B-11732).
