A Cistercian village

Meșendorf is one of the villages of the commune of Bunești. It appears in documents in 1322, as property of the Cistercian abbey of Cârța (Kerz). The Gothic hall church was built around 1350, and its tower was turned into a strong bastion.

The wall and the interior

In 1495 the church was surrounded by a sandstone and limestone defence wall, still five metres high today. The wall had three defence towers, two of which have survived, and an outer bailey was added in the 16th century. In 1888 part of the wall was demolished to make room for the school. Inside, the wooden gallery on three sides with Baroque painting dominates, together with the winged altar from 1693, above which stands the organ from 1914.

Opening hours and prices (checked 12 October 2026)
