A village recorded in 1206
Șoarș appears in a document from 1206, which makes it one of the oldest recorded settlements in Transylvania. The church is a Gothic hall church from the middle of the 15th century, probably built on the site of an older Romanesque basilica. It is a historic monument of national importance (LMI code BV-II-a-A-11827).
What remains of the fortification
The enclosure from the first half of the 16th century had six defence towers. The wall and towers were dismantled at the beginning of the 20th century, and the stone was used for the school. Today the church and the southern granary survive. Inside, look for the remains of a rood screen at the base of the triumphal arch, a rare feature in Transylvania. The 2021 façade works, worth 45,000 euros, were paid entirely from donations by the village's former community.
