The fortified church in Vulcan has no published visiting hours and, most of the time, the gate is closed. The keys are at the parish office: the Visit Romania listing gives the phone numbers +40 268 256 477 and +40 745 108 974. Call before you set off to make sure someone can open it for you.

History and restoration

Between December 2017 and December 2023, the Evangelical Parish A.C. of Vulcan ran a European-funded project worth about 1.5 million lei to repair and conserve the complex: the church, the annex buildings and the outdoor areas. The stated aim was for the church to become a tourist attraction. Of the 13th-century Romanesque basilica, only the triumphal arch has survived. In 1611 the church was destroyed by the troops of Prince Gabriel Báthory and stood in ruins for decades; rebuilding began in 1665. The bell tower dates from the 1790s.

What you see

Inside the fortified enclosure you can visit several well-preserved storerooms, and the Evangelical cemetery lies behind the church. A visit takes about 30 minutes, according to the tourist listing. The church also works on a rainy day.
