The oldest building in Brașov
St Bartholomew's Church, at Strada Lungă no. 251 in the Bartolomeu district, is considered the oldest church and the oldest building in Brașov. Its beginnings go back to the 13th century; sources give different years for the start of construction, 1223 or 1260.
What you see
Today's building was raised in the 13th and 14th centuries, in early Gothic style with Romanesque elements. At first it was a Catholic church; after the Lutheran Reformation it became an Evangelical church, and services in German are still held here on Sundays.
How to visit
The church is an active place of worship, not a museum with fixed hours. According to a source from 10 March 2026, it can be visited on Sundays, when services are held in German, and on other days only by phone appointment, on +40 268 510432. The hours shown on the official website are those of the parish office, not visiting hours.
Opening hours and prices (checked 12 October 2026)
Exact visiting hours are not published, and neither are prices, so check the official source (bartholomae.ro) or call before you set off. It is a good stop on a rainy day, since the visit is indoors, but only once you have confirmed access.
How to get there
From MAX International in Râșnov, drive towards Brașov on the DN73 through Cristian. The church is in the north-west of the city, on Strada Lungă, outside the historic centre, so you can combine it with a walk around Brașov.
