Current status (checked 12 October 2026)
Heldenburg is a ruin on a forested ridge of the Perșani Mountains that can only be reached on foot. According to Burgenwelt, the only source describing access in 2026, the path is hard to find, and from Cutuș the walk takes around 2–2.5 hours. The same source says that direct access from Crizbav is not possible, because the land in front is fenced off due to a uranium plant. There are no facilities at the ruin, and the site is not wheelchair accessible.
The heroes' castle
The castle also appears in sources as Hiltwinsburg or Rote Burg, and in Crizbav people simply call it "the ruins". Burgenwelt describes it as a castle probably founded by the Teutonic Order in the early 13th century, at an altitude of about 970 metres. It guarded one of the roads that crossed the Perșani.
What you see today
What survives is the ruin of a square tower, traces of the enclosure wall and of the defensive ditch. Don't expect a developed monument: the visit is mostly about the hike through the forest and the old stones at the top of the hill. Hiking logs from 2018–2020 describe marked trails from Rotbav (red dot) and from Crizbav (blue cross); check the markings on the ground before you set out.
Opening hours and prices (checked 12 October 2026)
According to Burgenwelt (2026), the ruin can be visited at any time and free of charge. There is no official website or manager publishing opening hours. Take water and hiking boots with you, as there are no support points along the trail.
