Current status (checked 12 October 2026)
The Citadel is under restoration. According to a source from 31 January 2026, the interior is closed while the works last, while the area around the walls remains accessible. No visiting hours and no reopening date have been published, so the climb is worth it mainly for the walls and the view.
The fortress on Straja Hill
The Citadel stands on Straja Hill, also called Citadel Hill, north of Brașov's historic centre, between Brașovechi and Blumăna. It is a historic monument of national importance (LMI code BV-II-a-A-11393). Don't confuse it with the Brașov Fortress, meaning the walls and bastions that surrounded the old town.
Four centuries of history
Local sources say that in 1524 a wooden fortification was built here around an older watchtower, and it was destroyed in 1529. After a fire in 1618, the citadel was rebuilt almost entirely in 1625, and the Italian-style corner bastions are dated 1630–1631. A deep well was dug in the courtyard in 1627. Later it served as a depot and as barracks. In November 2022, the supreme court ruled that the monument should return to public ownership.
