Cheile Râșnoavei

5 km · 10 min by car

A limestone canyon carved by a patient stream

Over roughly three kilometres, the waters of the Râșnoava stream have cut a narrow corridor of rock through the Jurassic limestone of the Postăvaru Mountains, shaded by forests and dotted with vertical walls. This is how Cheile Râșnoavei came to be: a formation spectacular not for its size, but for the way the white rock, rising steeply on either side of the road, turns the valley into a kind of natural arena. Located a short distance from Râșnov, right on the DN73A between Râșnov and Predeal, the gorge is among the most accessible in Țara Bârsei and, for that very reason, a place where wild nature reveals itself with little effort.

Solomon's Stones and a passion for climbing

The landmark that made the place famous is Pietrele lui Solomon (Solomon's Stones), limestone cliffs scored with cracks and overhangs, greatly prized by climbers. Here you will find several climbing areas and sport routes marked directly on the rock, from beginner options to technical lines for experienced alpinists. The southern orientation of the slopes and the shelter provided by the forests make for a generous climbing season, stretching from spring until late autumn.

Adrenaline on the vertical

Over time, Cheile Râșnoavei has become a point of reference for adventure sports in the area. It is home to a via ferrata route considered among the longest in the country, running for hundreds of metres of wall, a zipline stretched across the gorge and bungee jumping installations. All of these require equipment and qualified guides, so it is worth checking the schedule, conditions and prices on the official source before your visit.

Hiking and wildlife

For those who prefer a quieter pace, several marked trails set off from the gorge and the surrounding area, of low to moderate difficulty and suitable for families too. The slopes are clothed in beech, spruce and fir, while the surrounding forests shelter fauna typical of the Carpathians, from cliff-dwelling birds to the mountain's large carnivores. It is a landscape where you can alternate the shade of the forest with the view of the limestone walls in just a few steps.

How to get there from Râșnov

Access is simple: from Râșnov you follow the DN73A towards Predeal, then a branch road towards the gorge. Its position, just a few kilometres from town, makes Cheile Râșnoavei an easy day trip, ideal to combine with Râșnov Fortress or with other sights in Țara Bârsei.
