A stud farm since 1874
According to Romsilva, in 1874 the horses of the imperial stud farm at Mezőhegyes were moved to the state estate at Sâmbăta de Jos. The start was modest: five stallions, 76 mares and 59 foals. Before the First World War the horses were taken to Hungary, and in 1920 the Romanian state re-established the stud farm with 22 horses. The tradition of Lipizzan breeding is inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list.
