What to know first (checked 12 October 2026)

The Museum of Urban Civilization of Brașov is open from Wednesday to Sunday; it is closed on Monday and Tuesday. The hours change with the season: from 1 October to 30 April they are 09:00–17:00, and from 1 May to 30 September, 10:00–18:00. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing, according to the 2023 visitor regulations.

A merchants' house on Piața Sfatului

The museum is a section of the Brașov Ethnography Museum and opened officially on 8 September 2009, in the house at Piața Sfatului no. 15. The building is a medieval house: the door frame bears the year 1566, and about 80% of the original structure has been preserved, after consolidation and restoration work between 1993 and 2008. The arcaded ground floor was designed for merchants selling their goods; around 1800 the portico was replaced.

What you see

The exhibition climbs through the house in the order of the centuries: the 17th century in the basement, the 18th on the ground floor and the 19th on the upper floor, while the attic hosts temporary exhibitions. Merchants' spaces are reconstructed, among them an inn and shops with goods and spices, plus a lapidarium and a room showing a film about the history of the house. Under the 2023 regulations, individual visitors get a free audio guide, groups of at least 15 people get a free guided tour, and a guided tour in English must be booked at least an hour in advance. It is an indoor visit, suitable on a rainy day too.
