The museum of the villages of south-eastern Transylvania

The Brașov Ethnography Museum is devoted to traditional life in the areas around the city: Țara Bârsei, Bran, Rupea, Țara Oltului and the Hârtibaciu Valley. The Brașov venue is at Bulevardul Eroilor no. 21A, in an annex of the Art Museum, with the entrance at the right-hand end of the building.

Where the collection comes from

The museum was founded in 1990 and continues the ethnography section opened in 1967 within the Brașov Regional Museum. It has branches in Săcele and Rupea, which you will also find in this guide, as well as the Museum of Urban Civilisation in the old centre.

What you see in the exhibition

In the central pavilion, the permanent exhibition follows a craft shared by all the ethnographic areas: weaving, and the way cloths and woven rugs were used to furnish the house and in folk costume. Alongside it, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions. It is a good stop on a rainy day, since everything is indoors, and visitor reviews put a visit at under an hour.

Opening hours and prices (checked 12 October 2026)

One source from 2026 gives the hours as Wednesday–Sunday, 9:00–17:00, with the last ticket at 16:30; another 2026 listing gives 10:00–18:00. The museum's 2023 regulations explain the difference: 9:00–17:00 in winter (1 October–30 April) and 10:00–18:00 in summer, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. For prices, check the official source. The same 2023 regulations provide a free audio guide for individual visitors and free guiding for groups of at least 15 people.

How to get there

From MAX International in Râșnov, drive towards Brașov on the DN73 through Cristian and enter the city towards Bulevardul Eroilor, next to the Central Park. The museum is a few steps from the historic centre, so the visit combines easily with a walk. You can see the exact distance and time with the navigation buttons on this page.
