The museum of the villages around Rupea
In the centre of Rupea, at no. 191, in a recently renovated 18th-century building, the “Gheorghe Cernea” Ethnographic Museum shows the everyday life of the surrounding villages. The museum is part of the Brașov Ethnography Museum network and has had its present form since 2007.
The folklorist who gave it its name
The museum is named after the folklorist Gheorghe Cernea (1898–1965), who gathered a large collection of household objects, costumes, photographs and songs from the area. Today's exhibition keeps part of what remains of his collection.
What you see in the exhibition
The exhibition covers traditional fishing on the Olt, the pottery centre of Drăușeni, the customs of the local Saxons (Kronenfest), the Romanian wedding, interiors of Saxon and Romanian houses and the trade of the old market town of Cohalm, as Rupea used to be called. It is a good stop on a rainy day, since everything is indoors.
