Current status (checked 12 October 2026)
The Ice Cave is a natural cavity with no published opening hours, ticket or managing body. It is not a cave developed for visitors: you reach it only on foot, on long mountain trails, and the entrance is narrow. Do not go in without a torch and without experience, and with small children it is better to see it only from outside.
A cave on a vertical fissure
The cave is in the Piatra Mare massif, in the Gâtul Chivei area, above Săcele. Sources describe it as a cavity formed along a vertical fissure in the limestone, with a tight entrance. We found no published figures on its size or on current conditions inside.
Which trails lead there
The blue-stripe trail links Săcele with the Piatra Mare chalet, passing the Bunloc chalet and the Ice Cave. Munții Noștri describes it as demanding: about 9.7 km, around 4–5 hours of walking and more than 1,200 m of height difference; in winter it is accessible depending on the snow. Another trail starts from Dâmbu Morii, past Șirul Stâncilor, marked with a red dot and with a blue stripe for the last 300 m, in 2–2½ hours; one trail guide lists it as inaccessible in winter. From the cave to the Piatra Mare chalet it is about another hour and a half. Wear mountain boots and check the waymarks on the ground.
Opening hours and prices (checked 12 October 2026)
Opening hours and prices are not published for 2026 — check the official source. The cave has no official website. The length of the visit itself is not stated; what counts most is the walking time on the trail.
