The gate into Șchei
The Șchei Gate links the old centre of Brașov with the Șcheii Brașovului district, the old Romanian quarter beyond the fortress walls. It stands right next to the much older Catherine's Gate and is one of the most photographed spots on the edge of the historic centre.
A 19th-century gate
The gate was built in 1827–1828 in classical style, with the look of a triumphal arch. It has three openings: a large arch in the middle, for carriages and cars, and two smaller arches for pedestrians. It is a historic monument, and an article from 2024 notes that the latest repairs were made in 2004 and that a partial rehabilitation used unsuitable materials.
What you see around it
Through the gate you walk straight into the lanes of Șchei, towards St Nicholas Church and the First Romanian School. On the side towards the centre begins Poarta Șchei street, where the Synagogue stands, and Rope Street also comes out here. Catherine's Gate is a few steps away, so the gate is a good starting point for a walk through Șchei.
Opening hours and prices (checked 12 October 2026)
The gate is a monument in a public space: it has no opening hours and needs no ticket, and you can see it from the street at any time. The information comes from tourist sources consulted in 2026; there is no dedicated official website.
How to get there
From MAX International in Râșnov, drive towards Brașov on the DN73 through Cristian and enter the city towards the historic centre. Leave the car in a car park in the centre and continue on foot to the end of Poarta Șchei street. You can see the exact distance and time with the navigation buttons on this page.
