A limestone corridor where the sky narrows to the width of a hand
There are places where the mountain opens up, and places where the mountain closes in around your shoulders. The Zărnești Gorges belong to the second kind: a defile cut into limestone at the edge of Zărnești, with walls that rise towards 200 metres and, at their narrowest points, leave less than six metres between them. It is one of the most visited sights in the Piatra Craiului massif, precisely because it offers a spectacular landscape without demanding any mountaineering experience.
How the canyon was carved
The gorges, also known as Cheile Zărneștiului, are the patient work of water on limestone rock. The water first flows on the surface, then seeps through the cracks and works the stone from within. That is why the bed you follow is most often dry, while the stream can be heard clearly especially in spring, as the snow melts, or after heavy rains. Everywhere you can read the layers of rock and the karst formations shaped over time.
What you see along the trail
The path through the gorge is paved and gentle, suitable even for families with children. The vertical walls are used for climbing, and the area is home to dozens of climbing routes. With a little luck and patience, you may spot the chamois on the rocks, while the information panels in the park explain the flora, fauna and geology of the place. Car access is stopped by a barrier at the entrance, so the quiet remains undisturbed.
Onward, towards Cabana Curmătura
The gorges are also one of the main gateways to the trails of Piatra Craiului. The red cross and blue stripe markings lead higher, towards Cabana Curmătura, set at around 1,470 metres altitude, a natural stopping point for those who wish to continue hiking along the massif's paths.
How to get there and what is good to know
The starting point is Fântâna lui Botorog, near Zărnești, a short distance from Râșnov, where MAX International is located. From the edge of town you climb the forest road up to the barrier, where the entrance into the gorge begins. The gorges lie within Piatra Craiului National Park, so check the schedule, visiting rules and fees on the official source before your visit, and bring comfortable footwear, water and an extra layer, because between the walls the air stays cool even in summer.
