A biathlon field turned heart of Romanian metal
Few would have imagined that a biathlon field at the foot of Râșnov Citadel would become the most important meeting point for lovers of extreme music in Romania. Rockstadt Extreme Fest began in 2013 as a modest, few-day event, drawing around 2,000 people in its first editions. From there it grew, edition after edition, until it became an internationally recognized name, considered by many the most important festival of its genre in Eastern Europe.
The sound the festival brings
As the name suggests, an “extreme fest” means the entire spectrum of heavy metal: death metal, black metal, metalcore, grindcore, but also more melodic or industrial territory. Over the years, the stages at Râșnov have hosted heavyweight names such as Behemoth, Amon Amarth, Kreator, Dimmu Borgir, Testament, Napalm Death and Opeth, alongside dozens of Romanian and emerging bands. In the big editions it reached three stages and nearly a hundred bands over the course of the event.
The atmosphere beneath the citadel
The festival's special charm has always come from its setting: the silhouette of Râșnov Citadel watching over the stages from its rock, the surrounding forest and the mountains of Brașov as a backdrop. With camping areas and a crowd that grew to over 10,000 participants per day in recent editions, Rockstadt became a community that returned year after year, as much for the music as for the sense of collective tribute beneath walls centuries old.
The timing and an important change
The festival usually took place at the turn between July and August, in the height of summer. After 11 editions hosted at Râșnov, the 2025 edition was the last one held here; starting in 2026, the main event moved to a larger venue in Ghimbav, to keep up with the growth of its audience and production. Because the dates and program change from year to year, check the schedule and prices on the official source before your visit.
How to get there from Râșnov
For MAX International guests in Râșnov, entire editions of the festival took place practically in town, at the foot of the citadel, within comfortable walking distance. Even though the main event is changing its address, Râșnov remains a comfortable starting point for the Bran–Brașov area; for the exact location of each edition, always consult the organizers' official announcements.
