A fairytale market beneath the tower of the Council House

Few places in Romania offer a more fitting festive setting than Piața Sfatului in Brașov. Here, among the colourful façades of the Old Town and the Gothic silhouette of the Council House tower, the Christmas Market is set up every winter, with wooden chalets, lights and the scent of cinnamon and mulled wine. It is one of the most beloved festive markets in Transylvania, and its proximity to Râșnov (where MAX International is located, about 17 kilometres away) makes it an easy evening getaway to tick off.

The medieval heart of the city

Piața Sfatului has always been the commercial and administrative centre of Brașov. The Council House, built from 1420 onwards, hosted the town council's assemblies and its court, and today it houses the County History Museum. The building blends Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, and its tower has dominated the square for centuries. This authentic setting, not an improvised backdrop, is what gives the market its special charm.

What you will find among the chalets

The market brings together local craftsmen and producers, with handmade objects, decorations and holiday gifts. There is no shortage of warm dishes, mulled wine, pancakes and kürtőskalács (Szekler chimney cake). In recent editions, an imposing natural fir tree, over 30 metres tall, was placed in the middle of the square and decorated with thousands of lights, becoming the favourite meeting point for photos.

More than a single square

The celebration is not limited to Piața Sfatului. The festivities also extend towards Piața Sfântul Ioan and the surrounding area, forming a lit route through the city centre. Historic buildings such as the Schei Gate and Catherine's Gate are bathed in festive lights, and the programme includes carols, themed concerts and workshops for children, with a visit from Santa Claus in the days before the holiday.

When and how to get there

The market is usually held at the end of November and stays open until after New Year, during the winter holiday period. Being very popular, the Old Town becomes crowded on weekends and in the evening, so it is worth coming earlier. Check the schedule and prices (parking, any activities) on the official source before your visit, as the details change from one edition to the next.
