Traseu: Cabana Omu – Muntele Strungile – Cabana Padina (bandă roșie)

A long descent along the western ridge of the Bucegi, from Cabana Omu (2,507 m) to Cabana Padina (1,509 m), with no water sources. Waymark: red stripe (code 01MN54). Distance: 12.34 km according to Munții Noștri, 12.4 km according to OpenStreetMap. Elevation: 260 m of ascent and 1,245 m of descent. Duration: 5:45 h; the Munții Noștri description speaks of about 3–4 h. Difficulty: medium/difficult.

Where it goes

According to Munții Noștri, from Cabana Omu the route skirts Vârful Bucura Dumbravă to the west, passes below Vârful Găvanele and above Mecetul Turcesc to the eastern saddle of Culmea Doamnele. It climbs gently below Vârful Doamnele (2,402 m), drops to Șaua Doamnele and continues past Vârful Guțanu (2,246 m) to Șaua Bătrâna, with the Bătrâna refuge. It descends the eastern side of Vârful Bătrâna to Șaua Țapului, below Colții Țapului and Strungile Mari, to Șaua Strunga (1,909 m), with the Strunga refuge, on the old Border Guards' Road (Drumul Grănicerilor). From there it descends the left slope of the Coteanu Valley, past the Strunga sheepfold, to Cabana Padina (1,509 m).

Safety

In winter, according to Munții Noștri, heavy snow can cause problems. Water: there are no water sources on the route; carry all the water you need. Shelters: Cabana Omu at the start, the Bătrâna refuge, the Strunga refuge and Cabana Padina, at the end. Check beforehand whether the huts are open and have room. Munții Noștri recommends the route to hikers experienced in route-finding. For timing, plan with the larger figure. The risk of bears is not published in our sources. In an emergency call 112 or 0SALVAMONT (0725 826 668). The route is not in Brașov County; P2 lists Salvamont Brașov (0736 628 948), but the local Salvamont service has not been checked.

Getting to the start

Cabana Omu can only be reached on foot. From Bran, the red-stripe (01MN21), yellow-triangle (01MN22) and red-cross (01MN23) routes climb to Omu; they are also described in this guide. The navigation buttons on this page take you to Bran, where these routes start. The route does not return to the start, so plan your way back beforehand. Cabana Padina is in the Ialomița Valley, far from Bran.
