In short (checked 15 October 2026)

Waymark: red stripe (code 02MN24). Distance: 16.3 km. Elevation: over 1,000 m (P2); Munții Noștri gives 420 m of ascent and 1,410 m of descent. Duration: over 8 h; in reverse, uphill, 8–10 h (P2); Munții Noștri: 7 h 45 min – 8 h 45 min. Difficulty: medium/difficult.

Where it goes

According to Munții Noștri, the route is part of the main path linking the Piatra Craiului ridge with the Bucegi–Leaota ridges at the Giuvala Pass. It starts on La Om Peak (2,238 m), the highest point of the massif, and begins with a long, hard descent on switchbacks through the cirque of the Cheii Valley, with Colții Găinii on the left and the Hornurile Grindului cliffs on the right. It passes the Grind 1 shelter and reaches La Table, then continues through Șaua Joaca, Curmătura Groapelor and Șaua La Crucea Spărturilor, through the area of the villages of Șirnea and Fundata, to the Giuvala Pass (1,262 m), the highest point of the Rucăr–Bran corridor. P2 lists it as an approved route, demanding in its first part. Munții Noștri notes that the section from Șaua Vlădușca can also be ridden by mountain bike.

Safety

In winter the route is only partly accessible: the section between La Om Peak and the Grind 1 shelter is impassable, on a steep path with scree. There is water at a spring near the La Table junction, and shelter at the Grind 1 refuge. Bear risk is not published in our sources. The route crosses Piatra Craiului National Park. The visitor ticket costs 10 lei per person and is valid for 7 days; children under 14 go free (pcrai.ro/bilete, 2026 prices, read on 7 October 2026). Park rules and any restrictions are on pcrai.ro. In an emergency call 112 or 0SALVAMONT (0725 826 668). Salvamont Zărnești, for information: 0733 008 323.

Getting to the start

La Om Peak cannot be reached by car: you get there only on foot, on other marked routes, for example the ridge route that starts at Cabana Curmătura. The lower end, the Giuvala Pass, is on the DN73, the road climbing from Bran towards Rucăr; from MAX International in Râșnov, drive towards Bran and continue on the DN73. Parking at the start is not published in our sources. The route links two distant points, so plan in advance how you will get back. You can see the distance and driving time with the navigation buttons on this page.
